Tim McHugh - Traditional Irish Flute Player
Artists Profile
Tim McHugh is a flute player from Newport in Co. Mayo. Traditional Irish music, song and dance have been part of his family on both sides for generations. While growing up in Mayo, Tim learned traditional Irish music informally from his family and local musicians such as the well-known accordion player Seamus Heneghan. He was also lucky enough to pick up flute playing tips from a few flute blow-ins to the area including Gary Hastings and Brian Lennon.Although flavoured by styles from different parts of the country, the main influence on Tim’s style of music is the flute, fiddle and melodeon music of the Mayo area. Through what he has learnt from older generations of musician in this area, he tries to share music that represents what is becoming a more unique rhythm and rare interpretation of traditional Irish music.
He has performed and taught throughout Ireland, Europe, USA and even managed a trip to Africa! In 2012 he was awarded the Bonn Óir Sheáin Uí Riada for flute playing by Raidió na Gaeltachta as part of its Cuireadh Chun Ceoil series. He has featured on national television and radio as a solo musician and as part of a duet with his fiddle playing sister Marie. In 2013 Tim and Marie played on a live recording released as part of the award winning Tunes in the Church series in Galway, Ireland.
