Artists Profile

Comes from Gàidhealtachd na h-Albann, Glenuig in Moidart on the west coast of the Highlands of Scotland. Been playing pipes since nine years old and won the major awards in piping before turning his back on the musical restrictions and standardisation implicit in this pursuit. He was awarded a scholarship to study the relationship between pibroch and Gaelic to proved how the style had changed so much over 300years. This re-interpretation is more closely associated with Irish versions of the tunes where patronage from above was less meddlesome than in Scotland. Has published 2 collections of music, The Moidart Collection 1+2 as well as 2 CDs with a Gaelic singer, Margaret Stewart and a solo pibroch CD called Dastirum. He has directed and produced a number of music programmes for BBC and was co-director of the Highland Sessions that re-united music and musicians from Eire and Alba in their common language and music. Was teaching piping on the BA degree course for Scottish Music at the Conservatoire in Glasgow until last end of 2013. An annual visitor to Féile an Earraigh in Ballyferriter!
